Born to Travel - A Record of Worldwide Travels over 5 Decades
Sonntag, 14. Juni 2015 um 17:53

born-to-travelDear Members and Guests,

today, we would like to introduce you to the book BORN TO TRAVEL authored by one truly distinguished member of our sister-society, the Malaysian-German Society.

Juergen “George” Herbert Friele was the President of the Malaysian-German Society from June 1998 to 2000 and a Member of the Board of Management from June 1996 to 2002. Among his many notable services to fostering Malaysian-German cultural understanding was his role as a founder of the Jazz Circle in 1998 of which he was the Chairman until October 2001. And certainly memorable to many fans of the Oktoberfest in Penang was his supportive role as Sub-Committee Chairman and member of the Oktoberfest Organising Committee from 1995-1999.

George Friele’s professional anchor was his life-long employment with Behn Meyer & Co. He served the oldest German trading company in Malaysia as employee in Malaysia and Singapore for 33 years.
George’s career with Behn Meyer started in 1960. Already in 1961 he was dispatched to Kuala Lumpur as a Manager of the Fertilizer Department. In 1970, he became the Branch Manager in Penang, and was appointed director of the company in 1971. In 1972, George was chosen as Honorary German Consul at Penang and held this position until he was transferred back to Kuala Lumpur in 1976. In 1978, he married Eileen Khoo. The couple moved to Singapore where George from 1984-1989 first worked as Senior General Manager and then as Group Director for Finance, HR and Administration. Until 1998, George kept providing his senior expertise as a consultant of the Behn Meyer Group of Companies with assignments carried out in Hamburg, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Bangkok.

In 1987, George Friele was conferred the Federal Cross of Merit (BVK) of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by the German President. In 1991, he and his wife moved back to Malaysia, living initially in Kuala Lumpur and since 1994 in Penang. In 2000, the Governor of Penang awarded George the PJK for excellent and praiseworthy services rendered to the people and government of Penang.

During all such years full of activities and achievements, George Friele and his wife travelled the world. And thanks to their passion for taking notes and pictures, George was now able to stitch the many pieces together and come up with a rich and often surprising volume on their travels spanning five decades.

BORN TO TRAVEL is an invitation as much as an inspiration to all of us to follow in their footsteps, to seize the opportunity and move and explore the world.

Book orders are to be sent directly to Juergen H. Friele by using the order form (CLICK TO ORDER).
